Product observability

✓ Pattern Moderate cadence & flow

Make what’s really happening in production visible to the whole team — and to their agents.

The team friction When only a couple of people can answer “is this working in production?”, the team plans on guesses. Decisions wait on the one person who can read the logs; agents get pointed at code with no idea how it behaves under real load; bugs are debated from anecdote. The team’s picture of its own product is partial and unevenly held.

The pattern The team invests in observability as shared infrastructure — metrics, traces, and dashboards that anyone can read, and that an agent can be handed to diagnose against real behaviour. “What’s actually happening?” becomes a query the whole team (and its agents) can run, not a favour asked of a specialist.

Why it works with AI An agent is a strong diagnostician but blind without signal — give it real traces and it earns its keep; give it none and it guesses. Observability is the team’s way of feeding every agent (and person) the same ground truth, so analysis stops depending on who you ask.

Watch-outs Dashboards no one reads are theatre. Tie observability to decisions the team actually makes, and beware turning it into another vanity-metric wall (see the token trap).
